Snorkeling and Scuba Diving
You can enjoy fantastic scuba diving opportunities just offshore, and be back by lunch! Akumal is one of the world’s best places for sightings of sea turtles, as they breed and feed in the sheltered coves along the Riviera Maya. In addition, you will often see moray eels, stingrays, nurse sharks, reef sharks, octopus, lobsters, and huge pelagic fish like marlin, sailfish, or giant grouper. There are many snorkel tours that leave directly from Akumal Bay.The proximity and depth of the barrier reef makes it an ideal spot for night diving, and all around the Akumal area you’ll find cenotes, fabulous caverns with amazing limestone formations, unlimited visibility, and a unique ecosystem.
Kayaking in South Akumal Bay
South Akumal bay is one of the best bays to kayak in since it is protected by the breakers about 200 yards from the beach. You can easily glide through the glistening waters using one of Akumal Breaker’s two kayaks. CAUTION: Do not kayak directly over the coral reef as you could damage the coral and yourself. Do not kayak past the coral breakers.
Fishing
Troll for Sailfish, blue marlin, white marlin, wahoo and dorado right outside the marina and bay areas! Fly fishing for Bone, Tarpon, Permit is usually best November through June in the shallow bays of the San Ka’an Reserve and in Xcalak. You can find fishing companies in Boca Paila and Punta Allen.
